A white linen tea towel makes a great centre table runner, I used as a base white plates, that way any colour scheme can be immerged into the setting. I added blue and white side plates and blue glassware…

I had scallop shells saved away, and these are a great ocean theme accessory, place one facedown, and rest the other on top, place a small tea lamp candle inside. These are also great accessories for outside partying, lighting a pathway or around the table at ground level.

Using blue napkins…now here’s a personal choice..yes I love white linen “real napkins” but  with the unlimited use of paper napkins with their colors and prints you can find today…your dinner party napkin ideas are infinite. For decoration on the napkin I used everyday kitchen twine and twisted it around a shell as shown in the photo below.

ocean blue 006 Clean white, fine sand can be found in craft stores and is usually sold in kilo bags. Fill the bottom of a glass plate or flat vase. Place a white candle in the centre, twist kitchen twine around the candle and add a shell…

What other themes have you used for Summer entertaining?

Color My World

One of those fun memories, popped into my head, an image,a song and there  it stayed for the rest of the day. Maybe,it had greater meaning?

It’s a vivid and clear image of when I was younger, visiting my grandparents on their farm, I’m standing around the piano with my cousins singing while my aunty is playing the piano. I still remember the music sheet, with it’s purple cover…”Colour My World” a Petula Clark song. Do you remember it?

Oh, you can color my world with sunshine yellow each day.

Oh, you can color my world with happiness all the way

Just take the green from the grass and the blue from the sky up above!

And if you color my world just paint it with your love!

Just Color my World.

Sunshine yellow

Orange blossoms

Laughing faces

Everywhere

Just Color my World.

Thanks to those people around me,

My husband who supports me,and guides me and HE, Colors my world.

My family, although far away, I can ring and talk to with anything, and are supportive and loving, who Color my world.

My friends who I laugh with, cry with, and have fun with, who Color my world

… And to you, my new “blogging” friends, who over the past few months in this new adventure, of creating and sharing my world, YOU, Color my world.

Thank you everyone….Have a great day!

Carole…a colourful visit

mosaic48e81039ada81197271ece6654c78d4fa2a8cbc1

Carole is a city of ancient history. It’s a beautiful, historical sea – side tourist and holiday spot. The cathedral and the bell tower are of the year 1000, two important monuments in Carole, and the  history of Carole follows an evolution the same as Venice.

The historical centre, closed to traffic is a buzz, filled with tourists and locals, street cafe’s, bar’s,restaurants and fabulous shopping. A relaxed Summer vacation spot. The shops sell their local goods from ceramics, linen, wines, chocolates, and ice-cream. It’s one of those special spots where you can sit outside along the cafe strip,on relaxed chairs, red and white checked tablecloths an espresso or a glass of prosecco in hand and watch the world go by.

Today, the beach of Carole offers to the tourists who come to visit this part of Italy, all it’s beauty, with it’s fine sand, colourful beach fronts and a view of the Adriatic Sea. The two coasts, the West and East are pleasantly interrupted by a huge stone wall. A beautiful scenic walk along the Adriatic from the beachfront to the church of the Madonna dell’Angelo (Angel Mary) at sunrise or sunset is truly a beautiful sight and a must see.

This church is the oldest religious building in Carole and is a sanctuary well known and visited by tourists. It’s rich in history and also known for it’s painted fresco story on the ceiling. The fresco tells the story of how many centuries ago, the fishermen of Carole saw the madonna wrapped up in a ray of light sitting on a marble pedestal which was floating on the sea. With difficulty the fishermen managed to bring it to the bank and put it in the little church, from that time on this sanctuary remains in the hearts of the fishermen of Carole.

This open museum wall is more than a kilometer long, it extends parallel to the sea and has been defined as one of the most beautiful walks on the High Adriatic. Protecting the ancient village of fishermen.

The wide walk along the sea is protected by heavy massive granite stones made to form an artificial reef, this work started in the 1980’s.

In 1994 the Municipal administration established an international prize called “Scogliera Viva” ( Alive Reef), which is a competition among the best artists for the best sculpture. Every year in June these artists from all over Europe arrive in Carole, for a week, work with hammer and chisel, in an open aired studio, with sun and sea, clouds of dust and curious tourists, for the realization of their work. An image that remains on this open walkway museum, seen and visited my thousands of tourists each year.

The fishermen of Carole are a group of men we met,are men who all love their work, craftsmanship and of course the ocean. All  have “nicknames”the Prince,Johnny Deep,King of the panocchie,Nano,Lorenzo of Venice. The stories that all of them have and the secrets of their work, the secret spot on the ocean to bring in the best catch, the family backgrounds of fishermen fathers and grandfathers, and not to mention the love of their boats…Mayflower, Allessandro, Briccole..we could have talked for the rest of the summers evenings. A group of men with charisma , all with characters, joyful and friendly folk.

It’s worth the visit to the fishing port of Carole and yes there’s many an hour to spend there. The port has always been the centre of activity, and today the fish market is still in front of the port and officially dates back to 1858.

The original corridors in the historic centre are alleyways with cololured walls covered in fishing memorabilia. The shutters of the houses are all brightly coloured nowadays covered in Summer blooming flowers. A cololurful visual impact to the eye, and a perfect setting for a relaxed Summer Sunday afternoon visit.

This pie is light and crunchy at the same time, with it’s unique combination of flavours its truly one to put in your recipe log book. The zest and juice of an orange gives this pie a citrus light flavour and the crunch of filo pastry is a sheer delight.

Il Contadino

The Farmer. This week in our wheel of agricultural life, harvesting canola started. It’s a whirlwind when harvesting crops, our courtyard is a swirl of green machine harvesters, tractors and trailers. Early starts, packed lunches, bottles of fresh water, ice bricks and an energy supply of cereal bars and chocolate.

Canola is our first crop ready for the season. The fields of vibrant yellow earlier in the year when the crop’s in flower is just breathtaking.misto 13 018

A little close up…

misto 13 001

The “farm boys” are grown men with little toys when it comes to the heavy machinery, they look after them, clean and maintain them, and take real pride in them when they’re on the road.Security is the number one factor. The harvester is so big for the small winding roads here, that anyone on the road has to stop to let them pass. Yes, this is rural Italy. The harvester has it’s own permit and escort to transfer around on the road.

The end result at this stage are very fine, tiny granules, canola seeds.

This harvest of canola goes to the suppliers for the production of canola oil.

So as that wheel keeps turning, another day in the life of “il contadino”.

Nocino

Yesterday was a full day for me…no time to think…and I had the all important job on arriving home to prepare another year’s worth of Nocino.

The evening was just magic! Silvano was home to help me pick the walnuts and help in the preparation. Nocino is a traditional walnut liqueur, an after dinner digestive liqueur, a smooth dark colour, strong but sweet and really pleasurable to drink.

The walnuts, green, immature are picked on the eve of the festival of St. John the Baptist, (June 23 & 24).

garden leaves 068

Nocino is traditionally made throughout Italy, the main ingredient of green walnuts used as a base but the changing flavours around the region depends on the spices used. The quantity of walnuts has to be an odd number, I pick 39 for 2 liters of alcohol (90 -95% proof).

garden leaves 075

With gloves on…Highly recommended as the juice from the walnuts will permanently stain anything.

garden leaves 088

Cut the green walnuts into quarters..the husks are still soft so with a sharp knife this can easily be done..place the quarters of green nuts in a glass jar with a seal top..add the 2 liters of alcohol..as you can see the alcohol changes a vibrant green colour in front of your eyes.Place outside in the moonlight. And the magic begins!!!

garden leaves 083

Twenty four hours later, as you can see from the photo below, it’s changed to its characteristic colour.

nocino 002

The spices can now be added. I use 10 cloves, 5 grams cinnamon sticks and the zest of one lemon. Placing outside again.

Every day agitate this mixture and leave the jar exposed to sunlight and bring it inside every night. Repeating this process until the 3rd of August. The dates are very important so make a mark on the calendar to remind yourself.

nocino 015

Nocino Recipe

39 green unripe walnuts

2 lit. alcohol (90-95% proof)

10 cloves

the rind of 1 lemon

5 grams cinnamon sticks

800 grams sugar

400 ml water

I make 4 liters every year…we’re just finishing the last of  the bottles I made in 2008 we enjoy a small liqueur after dinner helping with digestion and it secures a little relax time, during Winter this really warms you up.

Enjoy!

Remember When

rose garden

An Italian friend of mine asked me to translate this song for him, he loved the melody and wanted to know the meaning of the words, as he had discovered a new country sound of Alan Jackson…after the first time listening to it, the second, the third it became also one of my favourites…there’s  a real message.

Reading Buttercups blog today, her link can be found in my blogroll…she asked, “whats your song”, for the moment this is my song,Remember When a few minutes of quiet and serenity,to reflect on the little precious things in our life, the people close to us, and those not within arms reach…. hope you enjoy!
